The first stop along the Riviera dei Tramonti is the village of Nocera Terinese, overlooking the lower Savuto Valley and the sea — just a few kilometres from Casa del Mare.
Its name recalls the ancient Magna Graecia city of Terina, which many place on the Piano della Terina, a panoramic viewpoint over the Coast of the Phaeacians. A stroll through the historic centre reveals the beauty of its churches, including the 14th-century Chiesa Matrice, the Annunziata, San Martino, and San Francesco.
The village is also home to one of Calabria’s most powerful religious traditions: the ancient “Vattienti” ritual during Holy Week, where flagellants beat their bare legs with shards of glass, reenacting the Passion of Christ — a striking and emotional ceremony.
Nocera is also a production area of the excellent Scavigna DOC wine and the famous Tropea Red Onion (IGP), cultivated in the green Plain of Sant’Eufemia down to the golden beaches of the Riviera.
Continuing along the Riviera, the next stop is Falerna, one of the most beloved beach destinations for locals and tourists alike.
Its shoreline offers a mix of wide, unspoiled natural spaces and well-equipped beach clubs. The beach itself is covered with large grey-blue pebbles, and the deep sea makes it perfect for diving, kitesurfing, and windsurfing from spring to late autumn.
Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a fresh seafood meal in one of the many seaside restaurants, where you can dine while admiring the sun dipping into the sea — a true Riviera dei Tramonti experience.
Next comes Gizzeria Marina, a must-visit for lovers of adrenaline and wind.
This coastal spot is a kitesurfing paradise, home to the Wing Foil National Championships, held every April. The Riviera’s unique microclimate — with strong winds and deep seabeds — creates the perfect wave conditions for water and wind sports.
If you're after something more peaceful and romantic, we recommend visiting Capo Suvero Tower and the lighthouse, where panoramic views offer magical sunset moments. For a true break, stop by the Turrazzo Beach, just below.
No sunset-hunting itinerary would be complete without a stop in Lamezia Terme, the small capital of the Coast of the Phaeacians.
Formed in the 1960s by merging the historic centres of Nicastro (now the old town), Sambiase, and Sant’Eufemia (home to the international airport and major railway hub), Lamezia is rich in both history and modern vitality.
The city’s name recalls the ancient thermal springs along the Bagni stream in Sambiase, where you'll find the famous Terme di Caronte — known since antiquity and still popular today for wellness and therapeutic treatments.
What to see in the city?
The San Domenico Monumental Complex, once a Dominican monastery, now home to the Archaeological Museum of Lamezia
The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul
The Diocesan Museum
The House of the Ancient Book, which houses over 2,500 volumes printed from the 16th century onward
Your walk can end in the old Jewish Quarter, known as La Giudecca, at the foot of the Norman-Swabian Castle ruins.
And of course, before leaving Lamezia — and the Riviera — don’t forget to taste two local gastronomic gems:

Travel Back in Time Aboard the Sila Steam Train
Yes, travelling on an old-fashioned steam train is still possible during your holiday in Calabria. All it takes is a ride on the Sila Train, which runs through the heart of the Sila National Park, one of the region’s most stunning nature reserves.
This special excursion adds a nostalgic twist to your family holiday — the charm and flavour of a bygone era.
The narrow-gauge railway climbs to an altitude of 1,405 metres, connecting Moccone station with San Nicola, passing through the mountain town of Camigliatello Silano. Along the way, you cross untouched natural landscapes aboard vintage carriages that feel like they’ve rolled straight out of an old film.
The Sila Train began puffing steam again in 2016, following a long and meticulous restoration of one of the great icons of early 20th-century Calabria. As it whistles and climbs through valleys and forests, the train reveals the park from a whole new perspective.
At first, it runs alongside a provincial road, but soon it dives into wild woodland. After crossing the breathtaking Camigliati Viaduct, a bridge that soars 166 metres high, the train enters the dense Sila forest and begins its ascent into the heart of the plateau.
At Croce di Magara station, you’re already at 1,354 metres, and after crossing the Neto River, the line begins a gentle descent.
The final stretch is a scenic wonder: you’ll admire panoramic views of the Crati Valley and Lake Cecita, winding through a series of sharp turns before reaching San Nicola station — the highest railway station in Italy at 1,406.5 metres above sea level.
As the train approaches, you’ll hear its whistle first — then spot the glowing headlamps, the black-and-red 1926 Borsig 353 steam locomotive, and finally the green carriages emerging from the forest. It's your cue that you're entering a different rhythm, slower than the hectic pace of modern life.
Riding the Sila Train is not just a journey — it’s an invitation to rediscover the joy of slow travel. Sit back on the wooden benches and take in the show. Or better yet, stand on the front platform of the first carriage, wind in your hair — the best seat in the house.
